WEST participates at ISFEV conference in Spain

In May 2022, researchers and industry representatives from around the world convened in Santiago de Compostela, Spain for the annual conference of the International Society of Food and Environmental Virology (ISFEV). Postponed in 2020 due to pandemic conditions, the rescheduled congress focused on “basic and applied research in the areas of food safety and health impact of viruses, viral stability and inactivation, emerging technologies for viral disinfection and treatment processes, source tracking, risk assessment, epidemiology or the impact of climate change on viral occurrence” and other issues.

The conference was held May 16 – 20, 2022 and boasted a robust program.

  • Analytical Methods
  • Risk Assessment & Viral Occurrence
  • Viral structure, stability, fate and transport
  • Viral disinfection and treatment
  • Virus outbreaks, Epidemiology & Source tracking
  • Emerging issues
     

PhD candidate at WEST Center, Aidan Foster, presented a poster at the proceedings entitled “Assessment of Chloramination as a Barrier to Coronavirus in Water Distribution Systems.” Representing a collaboration between the University of Arizona and Drexel University, Mr. Foster’s work introduces an evaluation of the effectiveness of monochloramine for coronavirus disinfection.
 

In addition to Aidan Foster, the WEST Center contingent at the conference additionally included PhD student Sarah Abney and WEST staff Priscilla Valenzuela.
