New staff welcomed at WEST

In February 2019, Bianca Miguel De Souza Chaves joined the University of Arizona WEST Center as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with Dr. Andrea Achilli.  Before coming to WEST, Bianca worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and Harvard University in the United States, contributing to several water and wastewater treatment projects.

Dr. Chaves received her BS and MS in Chemical Engineering from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. After working as an Environmental Researcher at Petrobras Company, she concluded her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, which was a joined doctorate in between Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Porto University (Portugal).

Her expertise includes advanced oxidation processes, biological and membrane processes, solar radiation, nanomaterials, toxicity, and control of emerging contaminants.

In addition to Bianca Chaves, WEST also welcomes new staff, Abby Collier, in Spring 2019.  Abby is a University of Arizona undergraduate student in the College of Social and Behavioral Science with emphases in Environmental Studies and Information Science and Technology.  Abby will assist with non-lab research and outreach initiatives.  A warm welcome to them both!
