History of Reclaimed Water Use Highlighted at WEST Event
During a special event on August 7, 2018, WEST Center welcomed speaker, Chuck Graf, to present on "Reclaimed Water: A Growing Component of Arizona's Water Supply." Chuck Graf, recently retired Principal Hydrogeologist from Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), shared his deep knowledge of water reuse history and water quality standards during his visit to WEST. Putting Arizona in the national context, Mr. Graf noted that 82% of water reuse occurs in just four states: Florida, California, Texas and Arizona. Significantly, Arizona has the second highest rate of reuse per capita in the nation with 27.6 gallons reuse/person/day (2014).
Mr. Graf discussed the expanding acceptance and use of recycled water in the state, and noted a recent recycled water rule update. Effective January 2018, the state of Arizona now allows for direct potable reuse (DPR) for the first time.

Mr. Graf most recently worked as Principal Hydrogeologist from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). From 1998-2006, he served as Deputy Director of the ADEQ Water Quality Division. He has a degree in Engineering Science from Arizona State University and is a Registered Geologist in Arizona. Earlier, he worked in engineering, hydrological, and water resources positions with the U.S. Forest Service, Arizona Department of Water Resources, and Tetra Tech International. Over his career, Mr. Graf directed groundwater, surface water, and drinking water quality assessment, protection, cleanup, and regulatory activities. Chuck Graf, and his wife, Mary, make their home in Tucson, AZ.
